That is the realistic sequence when the monsoon cooperates.

Don’t skimp here — experienced drivers in monsoon conditions matter.

Kedarnath: expectations and the biggest misunderstandings
The crucial inversion: Sawan is high season in Kashi but low season in Kedarnath. Monsoon reduces crowd pressure at the shrine and often shortens queues, but it brings rain, cold and real access risk. If you accept wet weather, you trade crowds for quieter darshan and lower peak rates.
The 16 km ascent from Gaurikund takes 6–9 hours on foot; costs vary by mode:
- Walk: free — just a poncho (₹100–200) and a stick (₹50).
- Pony: government-prepaid counters list ~₹3,500 one-way in 2026; expect ~₹6,000–6,500 round trip. Always use prepaid counters for a computerized slip.

- “Guaranteed sparsh” promises in Sawan (sparsh darshan is generally suspended during peak flow).
- No prepaid receipts for ponies or palkis; cash-only trail deals.
- Vague cancellation or contingency policies for landslides and road closures.
Simple precautions: book Sugam Darshan early via the official portal, insist on government prepaid counters for ponies/palkis, carry cash above Bhimbali, and budget a buffer day.
