Yoga Day: Sainik School cadets and teachers lead mass practice on campus

At Sainik School Nalanda in Patna, cadets and staff gathered Wednesday to mark the 12th International Day of Yoga with a guided session that linked traditional practice to everyday wellbeing. The event, held under the theme “Yoga for healthy ageing”, stressed practical benefits for physical health and mental resilience—advantages schools say matter now more than ever.

The programme opened with a short yoga prayer and moved quickly into a mix of postures, breathing drills and meditation. Officiating principal Lt Col Deepak Singh Thakur took part in the exercises and underlined yoga’s role in strengthening fitness, calm and spiritual balance, urging students and employees to make it a routine habit.

What the session included

Under the supervision of CHM Mrigendra Lahiri, PTI, participants were led through a sequence of asanas and pranayama techniques suited to all ages and fitness levels. Teachers, administrative staff and other employees joined cadets on the mat, making the practice a whole-school activity rather than a competitive drill.

  • Tadasana (Mountain Pose) — posture alignment and grounding
  • Vrikshasana (Tree Pose) — balance and concentration
  • Bhujangasana (Cobra) — spinal flexibility and chest opening
  • Vajrasana — seated stability for meditation and digestion
  • Pavanamuktasana — gentle release for the lower back
  • Anulom-Vilom and Kapalabhati — breathing practices to calm the mind and energize the body

Short guided meditation closed the session, allowing participants to reflect on breath and posture. The activities were selected to be easily repeatable at home or in the classroom, reinforcing the day’s message that small, consistent practice can yield lasting benefits.

Why this matters to students and staff

Schools are increasingly framing yoga as a tool for both physical education and emotional wellbeing. In an academic environment where stress and screen time are common, simple breathing exercises and mindful stretches offer accessible ways to reduce anxiety and improve focus.

The Sainik School’s pledge to incorporate yoga into daily life also reflects a broader push in India’s educational institutions to promote lifelong habits that support healthy ageing—something that affects teachers and support staff as much as the cadets.

Present at the event were administrative officer Lt Col S H Madhukar alongside teaching and administrative teams, highlighting the school’s collective commitment to the initiative. By turning an annual observance into a recurring practice, the school aims to make wellbeing part of its routine culture rather than a one-day ceremony.
