Palok Basu Foundation endorsed by Justice Nandan: expands legal and cultural outreach

A foundation bearing the name of the late Justice Palok Basu was launched in Prayagraj on Sunday, with organizers promising a mix of cultural programming and practical support for young legal professionals. Founders and guests said the new body will combine public outreach with education-focused events aimed at strengthening local legal and civic life.

At the inauguration, Justice Siddharth Nandan of the Allahabad High Court described the newly formed Palok Basu Foundation as a platform that can both nurture artistic and social initiatives and serve as a conduit for mentoring emerging lawyers. He specifically highlighted the role such an organisation can play by hosting seminars and other law-related forums for students and junior practitioners.

Rimi Basu Sinha, Justice Basu’s eldest daughter, opened the proceedings with a traditional Ganesh vandana. Grandsons Kaushik Nag and Rudra Ashish Sinha recounted their grandfather’s public work and said the foundation is intended to extend his contributions to law, society and culture.

Planned priorities

  • Legal empowerment — training and seminars for aspiring lawyers and law students
  • Social outreach — programs connecting the legal community with the public
  • Capacity building within local institutions and civil society
  • Cultural heritage — events and activities celebrating Indian arts and traditions
  • Developing a long-term vision and measurable goals for the foundation’s work

The launch drew a cross-section of the city’s cultural and legal circles. Present were theatre artist Ashilash Narayan, Rashmi Basu Mahajan, advocate Saurabh Basu, senior counsel Gopal Swaroop Chaturvedi, former commissioner Badal Chatterjee and Asim Mukherjee, manager of Anglo Bengali College, among others.

Justice Palok Basu, who died in 2019, was known not only for his tenure on the bench but also for serving as a mediator in the sensitive Ram Janmabhoomi–Babri Masjid dispute — a role that gave his work wider national resonance.

The foundation’s backers say they will begin by organizing dialogue sessions and workshops aimed at young legal aspirants, while scheduling cultural programs to engage the broader community. For local lawyers and students, the body could create fresh opportunities for mentorship, networking and civic engagement.

Organizers declined to publish a full calendar at the launch but indicated that announcements on specific initiatives would follow. For a city with deep legal and cultural roots, the new foundation aims to be a bridge between those traditions and the next generation of practitioners and artists.
