A police constable in Aligarh has been suspended after a 25-year-old woman accused him of demanding sex in exchange for filing her complaint about an alleged rape, officials said on Friday. The woman recorded phone conversations she says show the officer soliciting sexual favors and threatening her, and senior police ordered a probe after reviewing the recordings.
The survivor says she first reported the assault weeks earlier at Quarsi police station and also filed a grievance through the state chief minister’s IGRS portal, seeking action against a man who allegedly raped her on the pretext of marriage. Instead of taking immediate steps on her complaint, she alleges, a constable contacted her and began pressing for sexual favors.
According to the complaint, the constable—identified by police as Imran Khan and posted at Quarsi—promised to register a case and detain the accused if the woman complied. She recorded multiple calls and messages in which he allegedly tried to coerce her into meeting him and warned her against speaking to others.

The woman took those recordings to senior officers. After reviewing the material, Senior Superintendent of Police Neeraj Kumar Jadaun ordered the constable’s suspension and directed that a formal FIR be registered on Wednesday.
Police said the constable has been booked under relevant provisions, including charges related to sexual harassment and criminal intimidation. Investigators are continuing to examine the evidence and the sequence of events.
DSP Sarvam Singh, who was assigned the inquiry, said the survivor appeared before the SSP and a report was prepared on the basis of her complaint and the recorded conversations. He added that further investigation is underway and the case will be developed from the preliminary findings.
- Immediate actions: Constable suspended; FIR registered; inquiry opened.
- Evidence cited: Recorded phone conversations and messages provided by the complainant.
- Allegations against officer: Soliciting sex in exchange for police action and threatening the survivor.
- Next steps: Ongoing investigation by senior police; potential departmental and criminal proceedings.
The case raises broader concerns about barriers survivors face when reporting sexual violence, especially if alleged misconduct involves on-duty officers. Legal remedies are available, but experts and activists say trust in the system depends on timely, impartial action and robust oversight when complaints target police personnel.
Police officials have not released additional details about the investigation or about any steps taken to protect the survivor while the inquiry proceeds. The department has said it will continue the probe and take action based on its findings.
