Sri-Lankan Author and Religious Convert Arrested
Colombo, Sri Lanka (CHAKRA) – A Sri Lankan woman who is a Muslim convert has been arrested by the Mirihana Police due to suspicion of her participation in anti-state activity. She has recently written two books on her conversion from Buddhism to Islam with points on why Islam is superior to Buddhism and is a resident of Gulf State of Bahrain. Some critics have also called the book a public propaganda piece to help convert Buddhists to Islam. She was arrested while trying to send the books consisting anti-state and anti-government information across the border through freight. The books were written in Sinhala, an ethnic language of the majority Buddhists in Sri Lanka.
Her name is Sarah Malanie Perera, a Buddhist name but she was dressed in a burka just before her arrest. According to sources, although she goes by a Buddhist name, her as well as her parents and sisters had converted to Islam since the year of 1999. They are all residents of the Gulf of Bahrain but she was visiting Sri Lanka at the time of her arrest.
BBC reported that Muslims in Sri Lanka stated that Perera had no connection with the Muslim community in Sri Lanka. Also it was stated that the Muslim community of Sri Lanka had no connection with the anti-state material printed in her book. However a connection has been made between her and Jathika Hela Urumaya which is a part of the government alliance.
