On August 21, community leaders and university officials gathered in Sugar Land to recognize Dr. T. Vijayalakshmi for her contributions to Tamil studies at the University of Houston. The event underscored ongoing efforts to sustain language and cultural education for South Asian communities in the Houston area.
Dr. Vijayalakshmi, who holds the Thiruvalluvar Chair in Tamil Studies and serves as a visiting professor through August 2025, has taught courses in Tamil language and culture at UH since August 2023. The ceremony, held at the Indian Summer venue, honored her two years of classroom work and community engagement.
Tupil Narasiman, vice president for finance at the Houston Tamil Studies Chair, acted as emcee while Sockalingam Sam Kannappan, president of the organization, opened the program. University of Houston dean Dan O’Connor and India’s Consul General in Houston, D.C. Manjunath, both acknowledged Dr. Vijayalakshmi’s academic and cultural outreach during brief remarks.

Several local academics and community leaders reflected on their collaborations with Dr. Vijayalakshmi. Speakers included Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, Dr. A.K. Subramanian and Dr. Naa Ganesan, each describing educational initiatives and interactions over the past two years.
Representatives from area cultural groups also took part: Anitha Kumaran, president of BKM, and Mala Gopal, president of Kural Kudal, spoke about the professor’s involvement with their organizations. The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Perumal Annamalai.
