Dr. Persaud commenced such an initiative after her father, late Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud passed away. She hopes to keep his legacy alive since he spent most of his time in Berbice contributing to similar initiatives. She also thanked the Prime Minister for providing the land to build such a shelter.
Dr. Persaud further expressed her commitment to building such a safe haven for battered women and their children who had no choice but to live in an abuse-filled home because there was nowhere else to go or no one to turn to. She believes such a center will make women stronger and provide them with some hope so that they can be empowered and confident to live independently.
the center first opened and operated in July and has space for 60 children and their mothers. It will provide amenities such as a skills development and training center as well as counseling for community members.
Various community members for thanked for their volunteer hours and hard work put into the opening and maintenance of the center. Dr. Persaud urged community members to make the center their own keeping it close to their hearts so that people in need would have a place to turn to when in trouble.
