Dinesh D’Souza was born in Mumbai but came to America at 17. He quickly established himself as an astute and intelligent spokesman for conservative politics in his adopted homeland. In his 2003 book What’s So Great About America he elucidates what makes the USA the most successful society and country thus far in history. In an engaging manner D’Souza articulates very well how America contrasts with Third World nations such as the country of his birth. What many may criticise as nit-picking are actually very important areas which make the quality of life in developed nations such as America such an attraction for immigrants such as himself: consumer choice, emphasis on achievement and work rather than birth or origins, coming to terms with past wrongs such as racism and slavery. In this book
D’Souza takes on the ideas which made his 1995 work End of Racism so controversial. Since that book he has been accused of racism towards African-Americans because he described the pathology in black culture which was in many ways the antithesis and inversion of the American Dream, notably glorification of crime and the politics of envy and dependence. End of Racism was dangerously close to using eugenic arguments to bolster ideas of black inferiority. In What’s So Great About America, D’Souza appears to have absolved himself of this. Yet at the same time the book ends with an emptiness, a need for a spirituality to fill what has become a hollow vacuum.
No surprise then that his next book does just that. Called What’s So Great About Christianity it places our conservative friend firmly in the camp of America ’s Religious Right. This offering is actually quite a disappointment after reading his 2003 and 1995 publications. Even if one did not agree with the aforementioned books they at least tackled the stagnant corrosive atmosphere of multiculturalism and political correctness which has all but stifled free debate. In 1995 D’Souza’s explanation of black pathology unsurprisingly attracted vitriolic hostility and accusations of racism by what in America are termed ‘liberals’. Yet he explained that these pathologies are actually found in wider American society and are not inherently black. Indeed with the urban riots in England during August 2011 it would not be inaccurate to call D’Souza prophetic in his claims.
Accusations of racism fell flat here especially with BBC Panorama programme exposing the riots in Manchester and Salford were perpetrated by predominantly whites from overwhelmingly deprived white working-class areas.What’s So Great About Christianity was released in 2007 amid much celebration that it was the long-awaited religionist answer to the arguments by atheists, notably the powerful triumvirate of Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens and Sam Harris which was dominating public discourse.
That only makes the disillusion in reading that book that much more depressing. While it was always going to be a tall order in countering rationalism, atheism and secularism, D’Souza relies on some very flimsy arguments to try and prove his case. To say that societies are becoming more religious does not prove religion is any more correct than secularism. Nor does it prove anything on that score to argue that reproductive demographics of the religious outweigh those who have no faith. D’Souza takes some of this book’s ideas in a series of entertaining debates with Christopher Hitchens. He espouses that ideas of morality and laws governing the universe came into force from Christianity. Yet modern scientific developments actually happened in spite of Christianity not because of it. He plays down both the persecution of Galileo and the crimes committed by the Inquisition. His main defence of the latter is that crimes by ‘atheist’ regimes such as Stalin and Mao were infinitely greater. But then as Bertrand Russell wrote what is communism other than a Christian heresy; and he had the dubious fortune of witnessing the Bolsheviks first hand after which a declining post-1918 Britain looked like paradise in comparison.

A Very well written and thought provoking article exposing Dinesh D’Souza
Catholicism is NOT Christianity. They have stolen the term and used it for anti-christian purposes. Christians are disciples of Christ and follow the old and new testaments. They don’t partake in wars or physically attack anyone. In other words, the author of this article is throwing disinformation at the readers just like the people/persons he is “exposing”.
Many white people at least here in America dont practice Christianity in the traditional sense. They practice a form of paganism called white skin worship..in fact I call them white skin worshipping pagans. And you left out the biggest pagan temple of all…the Bob Jones University, Greenville, SC. Among the leading white skin worshipping pagans in this country several come from the state of Arizona. Among them are Governor Jan Brewer, former State Senator Russell Pearce, Maricopa County Sheriff, Joe Arapaio…all of them call themselves Christians but treat dark skinned Christians like dirt. Most white people in the entire state of Alabama and Mississippi as well as Georgia belong to this category. There are country clubs very near the governor’s mansion in Columbia, SC, which wont give membership to the Governor or her family because she is not white. Ditto in Louisiana. If you ask me what is the majority religion in the US, I wont say Christianity…it is white skin worshipping paganism. You dont need idols to practice idolatory. In fact educated Hindus in America are a lot less prejudiced towards Hindoos of other castes compared to educated white Americans.
Larry how is Catholicism not Christianity? Until the Reformation it was effectively THE Christian Church, apart from the Orthodox in Russia, Balkans, and Greece, Copts in Ethiopia, Syrian Church in south India, and Ethiopian Orthodox Church. D’Souza claims to be one of these born-again Christians yet he defends the Inquisition and thanks the Catholic Church were forcibly converting his ancestors. So where is my disinformation?
George I appreciate your comments about Bob Jones University which banned interracial dating until this century and not long before banned entry of unmarried black students. It was mainly because of lack of space and as far as I’m aware D’Souza has no links to this institution. Bob Jones was founded however on Christian principles. How is it pagan? In fact why the blame on paganism? Paganism has much in common with Hinduism. Even Rod Parsley has echoed the statement of Martin Luther King that 11am Sunday remains the most segregated hour in America.
Anyone can claim to be christian. Bob Jones University was established by a former KKK man, and his only goal was to keep the white races pure. Christianity was a good cover. Now, they cannot go back and say that God set language boundaries which means they will be claiming that their existence is an abomination…so the next convenient thing to do is discover something else, and that is called race. So, over the decades and centuries they started to worship white skin supremacy…not Jesus Christ or Holy Spirit…they can claim all they want but they are not real christians. But Joshua remained among the people in the camp that night.

Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Point your spear toward Ai, for I will give you the city.” Joshua did as he was commanded. As soon as Joshua gave the signal, the men in ambush jumped up and poured into the city. They quickly captured it and set it on fire. When the men of Ai looked behind them, smoke from the city was filling the sky, and they had nowhere to go. For the Israelites who had fled in the direction of the wilderness now turned on their pursuers. When Joshua and the other Israelites saw that the ambush had succeeded and that smoke was rising from the city, they turned and attacked the men of Ai. Then the Israelites who were inside the city came out and started killing the enemy from the rear. So the men of Ai were caught in a trap, and all of them died. Not a single person survived or escaped. Only the king of Ai was taken alive and brought to Joshua.
When the Israelite army finished killing all the men outside the city, they went back and finished off everyone inside. So the entire population of Ai was wiped out that day – twelve thousand in all. For Joshua kept holding out his spear until everyone who had lived in Ai was completely destroyed. Only the cattle and the treasures of the city were not destroyed, for the Israelites kept these for themselves, as the LORD had commanded Joshua. So Ai became a permanent mound of ruins, desolate to this very day. Joshua hung the king of Ai on a tree and left him there until evening. At sunset the Israelites took down the body and threw it in front of the city gate. They piled a great heap of stones over him that can still be seen today. (Joshua 8:1-29 NLT)

How was India racist? As for casteism all pre-modern societies were unequal. Medieval Christian Europe had serfdom. Japan to this day has untouchable Burakmin. Staunchly Christian Rwanda and Burundi have caste divisions of Tutsi, Hutu and Twa. Slavery still exists in many Islamic countries. Slavery was an essential part of Communism and Nazism through the labour camp system. Brazil did not abolish slavery until 1888. Britain only abolished slavery due to the pressure of market forces (the widening of the vote to include the middle-class in 1832) and even then replaced it with indentured servitude from India right up until 1922 (which proved yet more rich pickings for Christian missionaries).
There were many reformers. But this pathetic nature of Hindu society as you call it was hardly any worse than contemporary societies such as serfdom in staunchly Christian states such as Russia, Austria and former colonies if the Ottoman empire in the Balkans. Things only changed towards equality as a result of industrialisation and agrarian enclosures which destroyed feudalism and the urban guild system. Nanak was not a reformer. His aim was bhakti (devotionalism). All 10 Sikh gurus married within their own khatri caste. The thing is where is the “real” Islam, Christianity or any religion. If its in text these are often contradictory and also which text do we use? Guys, I am a Hindu but I have many good Christian friends – for life. Where I live I know few Hindus. With my scientific background, what I had to do was to decouple my interpretation of scripture, from others interpretation of scripture and decouple what is written (theory) from what people actually do (practice). Frankly I do not see people’s actions, ‘good’ or ‘bad’ as representing any teaching of scripture, but represents their interpretation of what they read or how they feel at the moment. I have my own interpretation and beliefs and in some cases, it may even conflict with the Hindu teaching, but this is what happens when you are human and have had a limited time in this world, with limited ability to interpret and a small I.Q. ( < 200) so all this 'bad' chattering among yourselves is really the human condition at play. I think all people should read their own scripture – and unless they have an absolutely prefect understanding of their desired scripture, share it among others – or else remain quiet. peace (please).

Hi Ranbir, it is just my personal belief that the relationship between you are and God is just that. Remove all third parties. Religious chatter and the responses it gets, is the cause of the most violence in most of our known history. Everyone wants their voice to be heard, everyone thinks that what they believe is right, in some case people get extreme. Does some of the extreme behavior account for ‘tradition and customs’? Humans are creates that are simply out of control. They have no sense of responsibility and consequence. While I agree with free speech, we do not use it responsibly. And while I will agree with you that the chatter is important, there are people who are less intelligent, less articulate, not as literate and somehow these are the voices we hear from time to time, they become our voice and ultimately, they are the ones who become leaders. And then we really have to prayer. Let me just say quantity is not as important as quality. I.e., better chatter not more.
