Picture of the Week: Ancient Buddha Statues in Afghanistan

The Buddhas of Bamiyan were 6th century monumental statues of standing buddhas carved into the side of a cliff in the Bamyan valley in central Afghanistan and part of the UNESCO World Heritage family. The Buddhas of Bamiyan were dynamited and destroyed in March 2001 by Islamic hardliners.
