The toxicity of mosquito repellent is a concern to the people of Kerala. There is no way to avoid the mosquitoes other than using repellents if one wants to sleep for the night. However, the concern was whether sleep should trump the environmental concerns of the repellent. Asha Workers in Udayamperoor panchayat have found an answer to the problem. They have created a completely non-toxic repellent made out of herbs. When the repellent is heated and fumed out of a coconut shell or out of an earthen pot, the mosquitoes are instantly killed by the reaction of the fumes. At the same time the repellent is believed to be totally non-toxic. M. K. Anilkumar, ward member of the 19th ward in Udayamperoor panchayat said that the fumes of this unique mix have no health hazards and have even proven to be hazard free to those with acute asthma or other diseases.
The kits are being distributed for free in the 19th ward where the mosquito population has gotten out of hand in the last few years. Asha Workers is also planning to distribute the ayurvedic solution to other parts of the panchayat soon as well.
A man by the name of Harish CG, said he was forced to stop his morning and evening walks because of the highly toxic fog used by the Kochi Corporation and Tripunithura municipality. The fog is considered extremely hazardous to health and knowing this people have chosen to close their doors and stay indoors during the spraying of the fog.
A shopkeeper near Statue Junction stated that the fog is also let out in evenings in very crowded ares of city so citizens have to be careful of suffocation and allergic reactions to the fog.
Due to these obvious concerns and potentially fatal risks, the Health and Hygiene Committee of Udayamperoor panchayat have come up with the ayurvedic solution which has been working.
The inauguration of the mission against mosquitoes was done by Dr. P. Prabhakaran, an ayurvedic doctor. M.K. Anilkumar distributed the kits in his ward and Biju S. Nair, a Junior Health Inspector attended the function along with the ADS chairperson.
Ayurvedic medicine is a system of traditional Hindu medicine native to India and a form of alternative medicine.

This is a great idea. I saw the system in use a few weeks ago near Kochi and it certainly seemed to work.

Mustard powder – Dry Mustard seeds in the sun and powder them or alternatively mustard powder is readily available in the market.
Powder of dried Neem leaves. The Neem tree chosen should be old and mature with a thick trunk and bark. The leaves chosen also should not be tender as they don’t dry too well.
Powder of natural sea salt which are available as big crystals.
Mix the powders and store.
Use it like Sambrani or guggul.Take an iron bowl with burning red coal in it.Sprinkle little powder in instalments .There will be smoke .Fan the smoke.Let it permeate the room or the house .The mosquitoes fly away because the smoke is unbearable for them.Ideally the mixture should be sprinkled on hot and dried dung cakes .
The smoke is not poisonous .
