The Tamil Nadu government claims to be secular but has been treating Hindu institutions and temples differently compared to institutions of other religions. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department administers 36,425 temples, 56 mutts, 47 temples belonging to mutts, 1721 specific endowments and 189 trusts. The department claims to be watching over all religious institutions to maintain secularism but it has only been looking over the Hindu religious institutions and this policy is not being applied to any other religions like Christian or Islamic institutions.
The indifference and lack of stance against such an issue by Hindus along with the pushy missionaries being let into the region are the two main causes of such an injustice. This has allowed the Tamil Nadu government to process the way it does, assuming such a level of control.
Prominent mutts of the 1840’s—when the British ruled—were asked to take over certain temples and endowments. The heads of these mutts made sure to get written documents from the British Government assuring the mutts that the temples would not be taken into repossession by the government.
The mutts ran the temples well and efficiently using funds provided where they should have been used—to perform important rituals and for renovations in the temple. Overall, the funds were used for the primary purpose of the temple—supporting worship. However, contrary to this, thousands of other religious institutions were simply handed over to the trustees with the government providing little or no supervision at all with what was being done with the funding and whether it was being utilized for the purpose of which it was given for.
The Madras Hindu Religious Endowment Act of 1925, was passed by the local Legislature for the purpose of providing better governance and administration of Hindu temples. This act was widely changed and adapted several times to consolidate the government’s power over the Hindu institutions, both before and after Independence. After independence, the act was widely expanded.
What Hindus must remember is that it is not the job of a government body to rule over and administer what is going on with Hindu temples, especially when the same body is not doing the same for churches and mosques in the same region. There must be something wrong if policies that were originated, to be applied to all religions, are only being applied to one religion continuously. Hindus should group together and petition against such government bodies, bringing outside agencies to help and audit the HR and CE Department and its activities related to this issue. Hindus should work together to gain back access to the temples so that they are handed over to their respective trustees or appropriate Hindu associations.

“… audit the HR and CE Department and its activities …” Just a request that except to commonly used abbreviations internationally and popularly well known, it may be advisable to avoid them and instead use their
full names to a little inconvenience to the author but to the convenience of the readers.
Ms Jaya amma has been educated and groomed at Catholic church schools with a strong influence even though she claims to be Hindu. This is typical of the modern day English convent educated Hindus to project
themselves as pseudoseculars by oppression against Hindu everything and worshipping and falicitating everything non-Hindu. It has become a general trend seen even more starkly in the electronic media.
It is very unfortunate but since the good education institutions are monopolised by the Christians which are revered by these pseudo secular political goons who will never cause any political interference in these Christian run schools but they are stupidly clever to install their students’ wings in every other institutions including those run by Hindus. Ramakrishna Mission run intitutions are no exceptions but Mother Teresa was a role model for a senior Commie leader. I watch it bear and grin.
Today there is not a single leader who can be called a nationalist. In fact nationalism has become a taboo word. All these leaders are corrupt and have their illegal bank accounts in foreign banks. It makes them highly vulnerable to the foreign Christian dominated Governments which control the majority world countries. For this reason our leaders have to shower praises on these Christian institutions. Regarding the Islamic institutions again, first it is a violent community; secondly their sheer numbers as vote bank has made all these pseudo-secularists as a puppet to these minorities and pampering them even at the dire consequences to majority Hindus. Though this did not and does not matter even in state like Kashmir where the non Muslims has been openly and brutally murdered and a constant rule of ethnic cleansing is going on since 1989 onwards more though it started with the rise of Sheikh Abdullah with the generous support of the (pseudo) Pandit Nehru who said that I am an Englishman by Education, Muslim by culture, Kashmiri by birth (born in Allahabad in family emigrated long ago in planes) and Hindu by accident. It is a shameful reminiscence I would like to forget or wish I didn’t know. It feeels so much nauseating.
No wonder as Ramesh Rao puts it, “We are like that only”. In other words, “We get what we deserve”. It is a simple rule of the survival which is a constant fight with the forces of the nature. This is one of the causes of decline of Hinduism slowly over the millennia. Yet I am hopeful that Hinduism is now all set for a better future
if we can clean it up of its rust gathered over these stagnant times. I have myself observed it while visiting the Hindu shrines at various places. No wonder that the westerners equate the India with a begar …???
Remedy lies in using these huge funds lying idle in these temples in establishing schools, colleges, research institutes, conducting researches in the Ancient Scriptures and putting those great knowledges into practice for human consumption. Hindus like Narendra Modi and Anna Hazare to come in public service and assert over these alien Macaulayiites to “serve instead of rule” this great country which was once a “Golden Bird” as opposed to the “Golden Goose” of British Crown.
God bless

India and its history thrives on its Temples some of which are more than 100 years old. The architecture, design, relics, worshipping idols, gopuram, sanctorum sanctum, all of these present a age which went away with these ages old temples.
