In Chicago, a television station aired content from a sports show on which a commentator referred to Hindu deities as “weird”. This sparked outrage from the Hindu community and led to protests demanding the content be taken off of the television networks website.

The NBC Chicago website had posted up a commentary on an ice hockey match, titled “Why a 3-1 Blackhawks Loss Isn’t So Bad’. Details on the commentary stated information about the Nashville Predators beating the Chicago Blackhawks 3-1. Further to this, the commentator was quoted as saying, “Predators were swallowing up space like some weird Hindu god.”

Once the Hindu community noticed such an offensive remark made so blatantly and further posted on a large television network website, they protested immediately and within hours the content had been removed.

Rajan Zed, Hindu statesman, thanked NBC in the Nevada Today for showing responsibility and immediately removing the distasteful comments. He added that doing so was a step in the right direction and that NBC handled the situation with utmost maturity.

Also President of the Universal Society of Hinduism, Rajan Zed, made a statement about one billion Hindus worldwide praying to Hindu deities that were labelled so carelessly as “weird”. He made a statement on behalf of the Hindu community expressing how such statements thus could be very hurtful to those who worship the same deities who were called “weird”. He had requested that the comments be immediately removed from the NBC Chicago website.
