Happy Guru Nanak Jayanti 2013 – Gurpurab

Guru Nanak Dev Jayanti or Gurpurab is a Sikh religious festival, also referred as Guru Nanak DevJi’s Prakash Utsav and is the birthday of the 1st Sikhism Guru. Guru Nanak’s birthday is considered among the most important religious celebrations for Sikhs around the world. Many Hindus based in Northern India such as states like Punjab, Kashmir, Delhi, Chandnigar, and Himanchal Pradesh celebrate this Guru Nanak Jayanti.

Guru Nanak was the 1st Guru and referred to as the founder of the Sikhism faith. He was born in in Nankana Saheb during 1469, which now resides in present day Islamic state of Pakistan. The predominantly Muslim population supported Muslim League and Pakistan Movement. After partition and the independence of Pakistan in 1947, majority of the Sikhs & Hindus fled to India due to religious persecution by the Muslim majority. In 1958 a Muslim leader named Hadhrat Khawajah Muhammad Sardar Ahmad Naqshbandi Came in Bucheki (small town of Nankana Sahib) and laid the foundation of a large Islamic International School caled Naqshbandi Sardaria, making the Nankana Sahib an international Islamic City due to his wide following.

The birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji falls on Kartik Poornima (full moon day) in the month of Kartik. In the Gregorian Calendar, the birthday of Guru Nanak usually falls in the month of November and in 2012 it is on November 28th.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji Jayanti is marked by prabhat pheris, known as early morning processions that begins from the Gurdwaras (Sikh temples) and then moves to different localities singing hymns or shabads. The celebration lasts for 3 days in heavy celebrated areas. In the evening, the Gurdwaras are filled with lights and many Sikhs attend. People also light their homes with candles and lamps.

The Chakra team wishes everyone a happy Guru Nanak Jayanti and auspicious Gurpurab. May Waheguru bless everyone with his blessings always. Here is a video telling Guru Nanak’s story and about Guru Nanak Jayanti.

Guru ji led the Sikhs directly to practise Simran and Naam Japna – meditation on God through reciting, chanting, singing and constant remembrance followed by deep study & comprehension of God’s Name and virtues. In real life to practice and tread on the path of Dharam (righteousness) – The inner thought of the Sikh thus stays constantly immersed in praises and appreciation of the Creator and the ONE ETERNAL GOD Waheguru .
