Hanuman Jayanti is the auspicious birthday of Shri Lord Hanuman Ji and is followed on the full moon (Purnima) day in the Lunar Hindu calendar month of Chaitra (usually March & April). Shri Lord Hanuman ji, also referred to as Bajrang Bali  is one of the most popular deities in Hinduism and Shri Ram’s greatest devotee; symbolizing strength, devotion, discipline, innocence and good (vs. evil).

Hanuman Jayanti is an important festival to many Hindus around the world. Legends say Shri Hanumanji is said to be able to assume any form at will, wield rocks, move mountains, dart through the air, seize the clouds and rival Garuda in swiftness of flight. Hanuman participated in Lord Shri Ram’s war against king Ravana in the epic legend of Ramayana. Several texts also present Hanuman as an incarnation of Lord Shiva.

In 2014 Hanuman Jayanti is on April 14th (India time). The festival is celebrated all across India and other nations such as Guyana, UK, Suriname, Trinidad, Nepal and Fiji and many major cities in North America where there are large Hindu communities. In Maharashtra, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on the full moon day (purnima) of the Hindu lunar month of Chaitra. A special feature of Hanuman Jayanti is that according to some religious almanacs (panchings) the birthday of Hanuman falls on the 14th day (chaturdashi) in the dark fortnight of the month of Ashvin while according to others it falls on the full moon day in the bright fortnight of Chaitra.

On this day, in a Shri Hanuman temple spiritual discourses are started at dawn. Hanumanji (the Vanara God) was born at sunrise. At that time the spiritual discourse is stopped and the offering of food (Prasad) is distributed to everyone. In the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated in the month of Margazhi( normally comes between December 16 to January 14). There it is believed that Hanuman or Anjaneya was born on Moola Nakshatra,on the new moon day (amavasya) in the month of Margazhi. In Andhra, Hanuman Jayanthi is celebrated on tenth day of bahula paksham in the month of Vaishaka. It is good to parayan Hanuman

Hindu God – Hanuman

At one point in the Ramayana, Indrajit (Ravana’s eldest son) launched a massive attack against a section of Rama’s army, causing massive slaughter. When Jambhavan (the commander) arrived at the scene to survey the damage, the first thing he said was, “Is Hanuman alive?”

Hanuman subsequently arrived at the scene and Jambhavan was glad to see him alive and safe. Another soldier asked Jambhavan, “Why did you ask only about Hanuman, is he the only one you care about?” Jambhavan replied, “No, but if Hanuman is alive and everybody else dies, we are still going to win the battle eventually, whereas if everybody else is alive but Hanuman is dead, then we are all doomed.”

There is a meaning to this story that transcends its original context and applies to every challenge of life. Hanuman symbolises devotion, sacrifice and determination. These qualities are absolutely necessary to accomplish any difficult and strenuous task. If we are weak in every other way, devotion, sacrifice and determination can still carry us to success in seemingly impossible tasks. Whereas if we possess every other skill and talent, it is not good enough if we are lacking in the qualities that Hanuman symbolises. If we are lacking in every other way, we’ll be OK with Hanuman alone, but if Hanuman is missing then we’re in trouble.

This is true on many different levels of activity. From a military perspective it has been shown that a weaker force with single-pointed devotion and thirst for sacrifice towards their cause is more effective than a larger, better equipped force that is lacking in belief and dedication. On an inner spiritual level, the qualities of Hanuman are essential for the spiritual seeker to be able to make a true realisation of the Divine. Even a simple man with dedication, devotion and determination can attain God, whereas a highly educated person with strong intellect and many other qualities would still fail without the qualities of Hanuman.

Chatsworth, South Africa (CHAKRA) - The Shri Vishnu Temple society in Chatsworth, South Africa is building the largest Lord Hanuman statue in all of Africa. Shri Vishnu Mandir officials thought of building the giant Hanuman statue 3 months ago in a meeting to discuss how they should celebrate the 150th anniversary of Indians arriving in South Africa.

LC Maharah, the project coordinator of the Hanuman statue said that the total height of the statue will be around 13 meters tall. Maharah also stated that the Lord Hanuman statue would be completed in December 2010 which still needs some plastering and painting.

Maharaj also appealed to the community and Chatsworth Hindus to contribute to the completion of the Lord Hanuman statue. The contractor working on the project is Umesh Harripershad,  who stated that they have used 12 truckloads of mixed concrete in this project, 53-tons going into the foundation alone and Shri Vishnu Mandir provided the design. Mr.Harripershad also said that he was working on this big project with only 6 untrained workers that were devotees of Lord Hanuman. He estimated this project to take approximately 12 months but is looking at 25% of that time. To make things more difficult, Umesh is following a strict fast diet and has been sleeping on the floor for the past 3 months as a sign of devotion as he considered the work as honorable.

In Andhra Pradesh, Hanumant Jayanti is observed after a 41-day Deeksha which begins on Chaitra Purnima and in 2010 the date is June 7. In Tamil Nadu, Hanuman Jayanti is observed during the Margazhi month (December – January). Another popular day dedicated to Hanuman is the Hanumantha Vrata observed in Margashirsh month (November – December) in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
