Hindus worldwide are highly concerned after reports of frequent desecration & Hinduphobic hate-crimes against Hindu temples in Malaysia recently.

According to reports, vandals damaged the statue of a Hindu deity at Dewa Sri Mathurai Veeran Hindu Temple in Bayan Baru (Penang) on July two evening. A statue at the Sri Veera Muniswarar Alayam Hindu temple in Petaling Jaya Old Town has been vandalised. According to a report in The Star Online, a devotee found the temple’s Nagama snake statue broken. During the previous week, two statues of deities were vandalised in Ara Kuda, prompting the temple committee to look into installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras for security purposes. This attack was believed to be a hate crime as no items were stolen from the temple.

In the past 3 months, a total of 7 Hindu temples in Penang were vandalised, with the culprits smashing the statues of deities in the temple.

Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that it was reportedly shocking for the hard-working, harmonious and peaceful Malaysian Hindu community; who had made lot of contributions to the nation and society; to receive such signals of hatred and anger. Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, urged administration for swift action to regain the reportedly falling confidence of the Hindu community.

Rajan Zed also urged Malaysia Prime Minister Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak to constitute a multi-faith national task force headed by him to come up with an effective strategy to put an end to such reported desecration of religious centers in the country. Zed further said that Malaysia Government and its various state governments should seriously consider providing adequate security measures to Hindu places of worship.

Malaysia’s population is majority Muslim, with large Hindu and Christian minority communities. In recent years there has been a rise is Islamic extremism and oppression against Non-Muslims.
