Washington D.C. (CHAKRA) — The fourteenth Dalai Lama of Buddhist Tibet, was in Washington D.C. yesterday to visit President Obama. President Obama is the fourth US president to meet with Dalai Lama, despite China’s request to cancel the meeting. The occurrence of such a visit taking place, makes clear what the stance of the US president is for meeting a harmless spiritual leader who has proven a past of peace and harmony.
As he was emerging the doors of the White House with escorts, the Dalai Lama quickly made a joke to not “ask silly questions.” This particular meeting was taking place behind closed doors which raised curiosity among the public. His holiness playfully tossed snow around as he entered the White House.
The Dalai Lama is a Buddhist monk known for his travels around the world, to meet dignitaries, offer teachings and give public talks, who was also a Nobel Prize Winner in 1989 for Peace. He has been seen for years as an insightful man who is sincere in every form and nature, thus is viewed as an advocate for peace and compassion. It is no surprise that the President has accepted the honour to meet him.
The Dalai Lama will again return to the US in May, 2010. He will commence his trip by visiting Bloomington, Indiana on May 12th and 13th. The two day session at the Indiana University, is focusing on the subject of the Heart Sutra. Following this public talk, on May 14th he will give insight on Facing Challenges with Compassion and Wisdom at the Conseco Feildhouse in Indianapolis.

American Buddhists are curiously silent about this. Imagine the uproar if it had been Bush!
