The Hindu headmistress of Kadial Nawrail Government Primary School in Mohadevpur upazila of Naogaon on September 17th, 2016 filed a case with the Mohadevpur Police Station in Bangladesh against the township’s Union parishad chairman on charge of assaulting her in mid-September.
The accused, Monjurul Alam Monju, 40, is the chairman of Raigaon UP in the upazila.
According to the case statement, Monju waylaid Headmistress Shilpi Rani Maitra at Khalshakuri village and slapped her in front of her husband and son for allegedly working against his nominated president candidate Abdur Razzak who lost the election on September 8. Shilpi Rani Maitra is from the minority Hindu community of Bangladesh who have faced extreme oppression since Bangladesh’s independence. In 2016 alone, there have been reports of over 25 attacks on Hindu temples and dozens of attacks on stores & houses owned by Hindus.
The Islamic State (ISIS) has also claimed responsibility on over 5 attacks targeting Hindus, Buddhists and Athiests as their declared goal is to make Bangladesh a full Islamic State. Currently, Bangladesh is approximately 90% Muslim, with significant Hindu, Christian and Athiest communities in some areas.
